My year-long odyssey into the various styles of poetry has taught me many lessons about myself. I enjoy getting lost in the world of rhyming words. There still isn’t one style of poetry I would choose as my favorite to write in. July is the perfect month to create a selection of free verse poems. This style of poetry has no rules, which I find liberating. They don’t have to rhythm, but I suspect mine will rhythm because that is how I roll. One of the poems I plan to share during this month of free verse is Under Siege.
Under Siege
Knock, knock, knock
But we refuse to answer the door.
“Go away,
We’re not interested,”
Rooster yells through the screen.
It could be the census taker,
The one who sent us the book,
We’re refusing to fill out,
Because we already did the census,
And it’s none of the governments business,
Concerning the number of bathrooms
In our house or what we pay for water.
The nasty person on the phone
Said they would send someone to our door
To make us fill out the form.
In the middle of a pandemic
Maybe it’s one of those vaccines people
Armed with syringe needles,
Threatening to force a shot in the arm,
To save us from a political disease.
Republican or Democrat,
You all look the same through my door window.
We now fear our president more than the hood on the corner.
Knock, knock, knock
“go away,
We aren’t interested.”
The trespasser only a salesman
Of windows and doors
Braving this neighborhood
Of nervous people
Armed with pit bulls and loaded guns.
Trying to sell overpriced shoddy goods,
To the working poor.
